The Session
The Session of First Presbyterian Church is made up of the Minister and thirty Elders elected by the Congregation for three year terms. This body is responsible for the mission and government of
the Church as listed in G-10.0102 of the Book of Order. The Session is charged with the responsibility of “strengthening and nurturing the faith and life of the congregation committed to
their charge.” While these responsibilities are myriad, it must always kept in mind that the primary responsibility is to serve the Triune God joyfully and humbly. While elected as leaders
by our peers, we are, in truth, humble servants of Jesus Christ.
Our Constitution is The Book of Order and The Book of Confessions. We use these and the Bible to discern what God wants from our Church as a whole and each of us individually.
For our reward is to serve Him by doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with The Lamb of God.
Responsibilities are fulfilled through the work of Session Committees. Standing Committees and subcommittees take care of the week to week responsibilities of the ministries
and programs of First Presbyterian Church. The Session holds stated meetings September through May and also meets each week following the first worship service for a time of prayer and
to receive new members.

The Diaconate
The Diaconate is elected by the members of the church to serve as one of the governing bodies of the congregation; it functions under the authority of the Session. The Book of Order of the
Presbyterian Church (USA) notes that, “it is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress
both within and beyond the community of faith.” As part of the fulfillment of this responsibility, members of the diaconate minister to those in need through its tape and visitation
ministry. Members of the diaconate visit the homebound and take a videotape, audiocassette or DVD of the previous week’s worship service. They also participate with the Session in taking
communion to those who are homebound following those worship services where communion is served. A Deacon is also one of the first people who will greet you as you attend worship on Sunday
mornings as they take care of the responsibilities of the ushers. They are available to answer questions and to assist with any special needs such as hearing aids and large print hymnals.
The diaconate is also responsible for preparing the budget for the church as well as the maintenance of the church buildings and grounds.
