“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hand all the law and the prophets.” Matthew 22:36-40
The welfare of our neighbors has always been a matter of concern for First Presbyterian Church. We have a long history of involvement in mission and outreach to help those in need in Sumter as well as nationally and internationally.
This church participates in ongoing involvement with ministries such as Habitat for Humanity and United Ministries. There is involvement in short term projects as well such as donating and installing smoke detectors in homes in an economically underprivileged section of town, providing Bibles and hymnals to be placed in a chapel in a war zone, and landscaping around a local assisted living facility. Jesus’ instruction to “love our neighbor” can take many forms in trying to meet physical as well as spiritual needs. Involvement in mission and outreach allows people in this congregation to use their talents and spiritual gifts to live out their call to witness to their faith.
